Authentic Mahebourg

Mahebourg - Mahebourg, Mauritius
Take a scenic drive through small villages set amidst rolling sugarcane fields to the southeast of the island.

Visit the 18th-century local family-owned biscuit factory, which has been producing manioc biscuits since 1870. Learn the cooking technique and unique biscuit recipes that have made the success of this factory. You will be guided around the factory for a short fascinating tour. Biscuit tasting completes the experience.

Head off to the village of Mahebourg, a laid-back fishing community of 20,000, crammed with colourful old houses. The monument at the Mahebourg waterfront attests to its dramatic past: the naval battle between the French Napoleonic navy and the British Navy who wanted to conquer the Island in 1810. It is the only war won by the French over the British during Napoleon's time, so much so that it is recorded at the Arc De Triomphe in Paris.
Stroll in the colourful streets of the village lined with small shops where the friendliness of service is no substitution for the sophistication of goods.
Further down you will visit the Naval Museum, housed in a beautiful Creole mansion dating from the 18th century. The exhibits guide you through the different phases of Mauritian history.
